About the Item
Buck Rogers preceded his competitor, Flash Gordon, having been created in 1929; the latter was written in 1935. Buck Rogers was authored by Phil Nowlan and Lt. Dick Calkins; (Nowlan wrote the stories while Calkins created the illustrations). All were incorporated into "Big Little Books" which later became "The Better Little Book" of Racine, Wisconsin and were the main source of Buck Rogers distribution. The publisher was the Whitman Publishing Company. The stories were loosely based on the comic strips in newspapers from 1929 onward. Many of the stories were also syndicated and broadcast on national radio. All of the stories were presented in a series of books dealing with 25th century science fiction inter-galactical interaction between "earthling" characters (Buck Rogers the leading man and hero) and enemies from "outer space" and other galaxies. His popularity carried on past World War II, into the early 1960's.
This particular edition of the series is dated 1940 on the frontispiece and is entitled "The Fiend Of Space"; about adventures and events surrounding encounters with the enemy in the 25th century A.D.
The condition of this hardcover "Big Little Book" is completely original and in very good condition; more often than not these books are found disheveled or in some state of disrepair. Usually there are coloring or pencil marks; ripped or bent over pages; loose pages. None of that is prevalent in this copy. It is clean, very readable, and page turning worthy; there is a strong spine with no loose pages; no repairs; there is some scuffing and losses to the front and back cover to the edges----all in all ,this is a very nice example of iconic Buck Rogers memorabilia to either add to your library or collection, or simply to put out for display in a 1930's Art Deco setting. Binding is solid and tight; no loose pages. There are (believe it or not! see images) 426 pages and every page has a corresponding black and white illustration portraying the action contemporaneous with the dialogue on the previous page. The front; back; and spine are brightly colored lithographs with the title of the book, authors, and space age battle scenes; while the interior has all the copyright documentation; table of contents (30 chapters) and publishing information.
