About the Item
Les Cannes (The Canes or Walking Sticks) is a French book by Sergio Coradeschi, published in 1992, from Alfredo Lamberti's Collection.
The king's scepter, the pastor's pedum, the bishop's crosier, the pilgrim's staff, the genealogy of the cane would be impossible to draw up, so diversified was its use and so varied were its symbolic functions. And even when the cane is only this simple shaped object on which one rests the hand while walking, it remains a pretext for an extraordinary creativity favored by the multiplicity of materials that can be used in its manufacture: the traditional shafts made of Malacca or Manila rush, pear wood, ebony or bamboo should not make us forget the canes made of glass, ivory or even ceramic.
Added to this variety of shafts is the array of pommels, for which the author establishes a precise typology based on their shape: tau, flattened, milord or opera, bec de corbin or curved...
The pommel, designed with particular care, allows all the virtuosities to convey the main information about the owner's status and display signs, symbols, or messages.
In presenting Alfredo Lamberti's magnificent collection, Sergio Coradeschi establishes a history of the various types of canes, which he introduces through remarkable iconography.
He also provides valuable information for collectors, warning them against the most widespread disguises and forgeries.
This book presents an extensive collection of over 800 pieces, accompanied by numerous color photographs.
