About the Item
César, L'Oeuvre de Bronze, du Silence à l'Eternité (Cesar, The Bronze Work - from the Silence to Eternity) is a French book by Frederic Ballester, published in 2002.
This book is the catalogue from the César exhibition, which took place in 2002 at La Malmaison in Cannes, France.
The loan granted by the César estate, along with works borrowed from private collectors and the sculptor's loyal friends, helped define the concept of "The Bronze Work."
More accurately, this exhibition would not have been possible without understanding Rosine Baldaccini, César's wife, and their daughter, Anna.
Comprised of sixty-nine major pieces, the selection is offered to the public in a retrospective and inaugural context. This autonomous fragment of the work, sometimes overlooked, anticipates César's anxieties about death like a testament.
The first bronzes, obtained from casts of welded iron, enabled César to innovate in metalworking through a new approach, leading to the development of welded bronzes in the 1980s.
Thanks to the rediscovery of his sculptures, he proposed recreating subjects created with a material derived from the assembly of welded scrap metal.
In his latest models, César constructs variations resulting from the various processes of foundry techniques: enlarging the subject and its casting, pouring the cast iron, deconstructing and subverting the form by cutting the bronze, welding reclaimed foundry elements, and finally overmolding. Thus, the welded, patinated bronzes emerge from a ceaseless interplay where a new universe intertwines and nourishes itself, perpetuating the art of statuary into the 21st century.
César refines his mythology, where the ultimate work is also revealed.
This is a beautiful coffee table art book.
