About the Item
Herbert, Frank. Dune. Philadelphia, New York, London: Chilton Company, 1965. Book Club Edition. In the original illustrated dust jacket and red cloth boards, with silver embossed titles to the spine.
Presented is a book club edition of Dune by Frank Hubert. The book was published by Chilton Company in Philadelphia, New York, and London, in 1965, in the same year as the first edition printing. It features the original dust jacket, with art by John Schoenherr on the front panel and a map on the back panel, and original red cloth boards with silver embossed titles to the spine.
The publication history of Dune first began with serialization, as “Dune World,” in Analog Science Fact
Science Fiction magazine from December 1963 through February 1964. In 1965, Herbert returned with the serialization of “Prophet of Dune,” across 5 issues of Analog, from January through May of that year. “Prophet of Dune” was the feature cover story in both the January and March 1965 issues of Analog, with famous illustrations by John Schoenherr.
Dune the novel was an expanded, reworked combination of the two serials “Dune World” and “Prophet of Dune” from Analog magazine. The first edition of the novel was published by Chilton Company in 1965. They reused Schoenherr’s artwork from the January 1965 magazine cover on the book’s dust jacket design. This is the book club edition, published later that year.
Dune follows the young main character Paul Atreides to his destiny as a messianic leader on the desert planet of Arrakis. An epic story arising from the ecology, religion, and politics of place, it is regarded as one of the greatest science fiction novels. Although book sales were slow for the first edition, Dune was an immediate critical success. Dune received the first Nebula Award for best novel in 1965 and shared the 1966 Hugo Award with Roger Zelazny’s This Immortal. It has since become one of the most popular titles in science fiction, with translation into more than 20 languages and almost 20 million copies sold.

Revised Edition. Rebound in ¼ red leather and cloth boards, with original cloth gilt-stamped pictorial front board saved, new marbled endpapers, and a custom archival slipcase to match. Illustrated throughout with engravings.
This is a “Revised Edition” of the Rand, McNally & Co.'s Overland Guide From the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean, via Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The book was edited by Charles S. Gleed and published by Rand, McNally & Co., in Chicago in 1883. It has been artfully rebound in ¼ red leather and cloth boards, with the original gilt-stamped pictorial front cloth board saved, new marbled endpapers, and a matching archival cloth slipcase.
As explained in the beginning of the guidebook, the purpose of the book is “to give the reader a satisfactory general idea of the States and Territories of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, through which the traveler passes in going from the Missouri river to the Pacific ocean, or vice versa, entering or leaving California at its southern extremity.” Following the southern route of railways, editor Charles Gleed lays out in extensive detail information on each state, including population numbers, key industries, important towns and railway stations, farming and agriculture, mining opportunities, and weather patterns.
Throughout the guidebook are countless engravings, both full page and in-text, from well known engravers of the time. Meant to further entice readers to take this overland journey, the illustrations offer views of key tourist spots, townviews, and scenic destinations, throughout the featured states of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The guidebook is also supplemented by pages of printed advertisements in the beginning of the book, showcasing local businesses, services, and wares.

A lush volume containing most of J. M. Barrie's (1860-1937) plays, 26 out of the 38 he wrote, of which 12 are one-act plays. This work was reprinted several times from its first issue in 1928, attesting to the popularity of his works for the theater, many of which discuss social concerns. The Twelve Pound Look (1910) concerns a wife leaving her 'typical' husband once she can gain an independent income. Other plays, such as Mary Rose (1920) and Dear Brutus (1917), revisit the idea of the ageless child and parallel worlds. However, Barrie's most lasting fame comes from creating PETER PAN, which is included in this volume, and had its first performance at the Duke of York Theatre in 1904. In 1911 Barrie would develop the play into a novel "Peter and Wendy...
