About the Item
George Eliot — The Works
Author’s Edition
Houghton, Mifflin and Company, Boston
New York, 1907
Limited to 750 numbered sets — This is No. 131
A magnificent and exceptionally preserved complete 25-volume set of The Works of George Eliot, issued by Houghton, Mifflin and Company in 1907 as the definitive American fine-press edition of one of England’s greatest novelists.
This Author’s Edition was produced in a strictly limited run of only 750 numbered sets, printed on hand-made paper and issued exclusively for subscribers. The present set, Number 131, retains all volumes in their original full dark-brown levant morocco bindings with richly gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, and the publisher’s elaborate floral tooling executed in gold. The boards are beautifully finished with geometric inlaid panels of marbled calf, bordered by delicate gilt rules, creating a striking Arts-and-Crafts–era aesthetic associated with the finest American bookbinding of the early 20th century.
Each volume is uniformly bound, with all gilt stamping crisp and bright, spines straight and square, and the leather supple and unworn — a level of preservation rarely encountered for a complete leather-bound set of this age. The pages are clean, fresh, and free from foxing, with wide margins and sharp impressions, reflecting the superior paper and careful presswork used in this deluxe issue.
The set includes all of Eliot’s major novels and writings, among them:
• Middlemarch
• Daniel Deronda
• Romola
• Adam Bede
• The Mill on the Floss
• Felix Holt
• Silas Marner
• Scenes of Clerical Life
• Poetry and Essays
as well as biographical and critical volumes, making this a complete literary monument to Eliot’s career.
