About the Item

Steinbeck, John. The Grapes of Wrath. London and Toronto: William Heineman LTD, 1939. First UK Edition. In magenta and tan dust jacket and original blue cloth boards with gilt titles to the spine. Presented is a first UK edition of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. The book was published by William Heineman Ltd. in London in 1939, the same year of the first US edition. It is presented in the magenta dust jacket and original blue cloth boards with gilt titles to the spine. Steinbeck’s powerful novel follows an Oklahoma family displaced by the Dust Bowl as they journey west to California in search of a better life. Interwoven with their story are poetic interludes that reflect on the broader social and economic challenges of the era. The novel evolved from Steinbeck’s earlier work “The Harvest Gypsies,” a series of seven articles on migrant laborers published in the San Francisco News from October 5 to October 12, 1936. The Grapes of Wrath became the bestselling novel of 1939 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. Praised for its emotional intensity and social commentary, Peter Monro Jack of the New York Times wrote: “It is a very long novel, the longest that Steinbeck has written, and yet it reads as if it had been composed in a flash, ripped off the typewriter and delivered to the public as an ultimatum. It is a long and thoughtful novel as one thinks about it. It is a short and vivid scene as one feels it… Steinbeck has written a novel from the depths of his heart with a sincerity seldom equaled.” The book also contributed to Steinbeck being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962.
