About the Item

Limited run of 750 copies (ours bears No. 529) of the anastatic reproduction of Ms. 459 also known as "Tacuinum Sanitatis" preserved at the Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome. We are dealing with a veritable medieval natural science encyclopedia: in 295 papers, plants, animals, and minerals are described along with their medicinal and therapeutic properties. The text is accompanied by more than 500 illustrations of plants, more than 80 of animals and 30 of minerals, as well as vignettes referring to scenes of everyday life. The codex can be dated to the late 14th century and came from the court of Gian Galeazzo Visconti as a gift to the king of Bohemia and Germany, Wenceslas IV Volume in very good condition. Handmade green silk velvet binding with burnished brass studs on plates, metal clasps and endpins, in very good condition. Papers in very good condition. The volume is housed in a wooden slipcase with leather ties and studs and title engraved on the front plate: the decorated ceramic coat of arms set in the front plate of the slipcase is missing.
