About the Item
During the interwar period, housing in Brussels experienced considerable expansion. Two major currents coexisted at this time: one resolutely modernist and avant-garde, in the movement of the Stijl and the Bauhaus, and inspired by innovators such as Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier; the other, both a reaction to Art Nouveau and its natural extension, which would be consecrated at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1925 in Paris. This formal evolution is based on technical progress in many areas and on the implementation of new materials, reinforced concrete, glass brick, steel, aluminium. At the same time, the habitat itself is enriched by the concept of the garden city and sees the multiplication of apartment buildings. All these aspects ? conceptual, formal, stylistic, technical, cultural and social ? are illustrated in this book by interiors chosen for their relevance, both prestigious hotels and more modest accommodation, all representative of the way of life and the art of building from this golden age. Through a rich and unpublished illustration, this work presents typical Brussels interiors of the interwar period and the art of living that is there. flourishes today; by moving in a way from the particular to the general, it restores in all its components the context of their development.

This is the third in a multi-volume collection providing a visual catalogue record of the decorative arts of the Paris Salons. Included in this volume are reproductions of the catalogue illustrations of furniture at the Exposition Universelle of 1900, the annual Salons du Mobilier, and the celebrated 1903 and 1904 expositions of the Ecole de Nancy in the French capital. This chronological record clearly shows the revolution in furniture design that transpired in France at the turn of the century. The illustrations trace precisely the emergence of the art nouveau style in the 1890s, its high point between the 1900 Exposition Universelle and the 1903 Salons, its demise between 1905-1909, the return to period revivalism and the transitional art nouveau - art deco style of 1910-1912 with the proto - art deco style of the immediate pre-war years (1911-1914).
