About the Item

Limited Edition. A painter's book The first complete work designed in gouache and cut-out paper by Matisse, JAZZ is the most accomplished painter's book. The set of colour plates, bright and violent, is accompanied by handwritten calligraphic reflections by the artist, a perfect harmony of text and image. This work was produced thanks to the collaboration and stubbornness of two men. While an art critic, Tériade met Matisse in 1929. Between them was born a demanding and fertile friendship thanks to which some of the most sumptuous painters' books and art magazines of the 20th century appeared. The idea for a particular book was born following Matisse's creation of the cover of Verve No. 8 in 1940: La Symphonie chromatique, a composition cut out in 26 different colours and printed in lithography with 26 passages. The excellent rendering will convince the publisher that Matisse must develop this technique to create a modern painting manuscript, the most beautiful book ever written on colour. Cut-out gouaches Matisse approached this technique from 1938 but it was with the creation of JAZZ that he reached this desire for the work born from the pure confrontation of colours. Using the same palette as for his oil paintings, he cuts out flat areas of colour, bringing out shape and colour simultaneously. In 1943 the first plates Le clown and Le toboggan confirmed the project of the book whose subjects evoke the world of the ring or the music hall, legends or certain memories of Matisse's long journey. Presented in a red canvas case. 3710 grams.
