The revival of interest in Art Deco and the applied and decorative arts of the 1920s and 1930s led to the rediscovery of its principal practitioners. This book is a comprehensive monograph on Jean Dunand, a key figure in the Art Deco movement, with 2000 works presented. Swiss-born French artist Jean Dunand (1877-1942) stands out for his multiple talents as a sculptor, goldsmith, copper maker, lacquerer, bookbinder, and decorator. Jean Dunand ranks as one of the most versatile and prolific exponents, with his unmistakable flair for technical perfection, most notably in his metalwork and his use of lacquer for decorative screens and panels, portraits, and furniture. After having excelled in finishing hammer-mounted vases and brassware, he met Seizo Sugawara in 1912, who led him to become passionate about lacquer, which he made his signature on his vases and his panels, furniture, and bindings. At the head of an important workshop, he participated in the major international exhibitions of his time, in Paris in 1925, 1931, and 1937, in New York in 1939, and was regularly exhibited at the Georges Petit Gallery and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. His singularity and the quality of his creations lead him to become one of the most sought-after portrait painters. He has immortalized personalities in fashion and the arts, such as Jeanne Lanvin, Louise Boulanger, and Joséphine Baker, but also from the world of finance, such as the Lazards, Carnegie, or Louis-Dreyfus. Jean Dunand also worked on remarkable sets in France and the United States, such as the music rooms of Solomon R. Guggenheim, the apartments of Madame Agnès or Templeton Croker, the shipyards of the liners Atlantique and Normandie, which crowned a prolific career of more than two thousand works. This book covers Dunand's life and career as an Art Deco designer working on the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, the Exposition Coloniale, L'Atlantique, and the Normandie. It showcases his sculpture, dinanderie, lacquer, ceremonial swords, bookbindings, portraiture, fashion, and jewelry.
