About the Item
Joan Miro Life and Work by Jacques Dupin. Published by Harry N. Abrams, 1962, New York. 1st Ed hardcover with Brodart covered dust jacket. A Catalogue Raisonne of Miro's paintings from 1914-1961. 596pp. 1158 illustrations, including 46 color hand-tipped plates with a complete bibliography. Considered one of the great artists of the 20th century, Miro has bequeathed us a definitive body of work whose influence has continued to grow over the years. He did not paint dreams, but instead, through his works, provided the spectator with certain elements so that he would be the one that dreamed. Miro never worked under the influence of hypnosis drugs or alcohol. His life, like his painting was always methodical and ordered. Nevertheless, his artistic personality and the way he represented on canvas what inspiration dictated to him led Andre Breton to exclaim, "Miro is the most surrealist of us all!" This book not only details his pictorial output but also looks at the artist's incursions into areas as diverse as graphic work, ceramics, sculpture, tapestry and theatre. A creative force in the plastic field who felt an equal passion for the world, a lover of objects and the bare truth of materials, Miro always revealed himself as a dream artist, the constellations that inspired some of this finest works.

Picasso and Marie-Therese, L'amour Fou by John Richardso, Picasso and Diana Widmaier. Published by Gagosian Gallery, New York, 2011. 1st Ed exhibition(4/14-6/25/2011) hardcover catalog with dust jacket. Picasso and Marie-Thérèse: L’amour fou brings together the paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints inspired by one of Picasso’s most ideal models and enduring passions. The exhibition is curated by the eminent Picasso biographer, John Richardson, together with Marie-Thérèse’s granddaughter, art historian Diana Widmaier Picasso, who is currently preparing a catalogue raisonné of Picasso’s sculptures. In 1927, on a street in Paris, Picasso encountered the unassuming girl, just shy of eighteen years old, who would become his lover and one of modern art’s most famous muses. “I am Picasso,” he announced. The name meant nothing to Marie-Thérèse so he took her to a bookshop to show her a monograph of his paintings and asked if he could see her again. Flattered and curious, she agreed, and thus began a secret love affair that would establish Marie-Thérèse as the primary inspiration for Picasso’s most daring aesthetic experiments in the decade to come.
