JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER (1807–1892) The Works of John Greenleaf Whittier Houghton, Mifflin and Company; printed at The Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1888 Large Paper Edition. Limited to 400 copies, this #16 Complete in nine volumes. A distinguished late-nineteenth-century American literary set, produced in a limited large-paper format and printed by the renowned Riverside Press, celebrated for its exceptional typographic standards and fine materials. Issued during Whittier’s lifetime, this edition represents the poet’s collected works in their most refined contemporary form. The volumes are handsomely bound in full leather, with raised bands and richly gilt-tooled spines, all edges gilt. The bindings present with excellent uniformity and craftsmanship, reflecting the deluxe nature of the large-paper issue. Texts are printed on thick, high-quality paper, exhibiting a pleasing natural tone consistent with age. The strict limitation to 400 copies places it among the scarcer sets of the period, and low-numbered examples such as this (No. 16) are especially sought after. Condition is very good throughout, with sound bindings, strong joints, and clean, well-preserved interiors, showing only light, expected wear. A particularly attractive example of a scarce and desirable American large-paper set. An elegant and enduring literary collection, combining historical significance, fine press production, and decorative presence—well suited to a serious private library or institutional collection.
