About the Item
"The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan", 12mo., complete in 3 purple full polished calf bound volumes, with gilt page ends and blue marbled endpapers, 1st edition. Written by James Morier, a British civil servant, and published in 1824 by John Murray, London. The front and back covers are decorated with elaborate gilt cyphers.
This is a political fantasy written by a British envoy to Iran about local adventures and observations in early 19th century Iran through the eyes of a fictional character named Hajji Baba. The stories critically chronicle the named character's exploits in various assumed professions and casts aspersions on Persian mores. It was clearly written with a superior European point of view. The author, James Morier, spent many years in Persia in various diplomatic and administrative positions for England. The tales are reflective of his English sense of superiority yet they remain quite entertaining and well-written. An important historical work reflecting early western experiences in the Middle East.
