Kiki et Montparnasse 1900-1930 (Kiki and Montparnasse 1900-1930), a French book by Billy Kluver and Julie Martin. Kiki Montparnasse or the ennobled bohemian. The unexpected story describes how a bohemian genius turned a Parisian neighborhood into the epicenter of letters and the arts. Alice Ernestine Prin (1901 ? 1953), nicknamed the Queen of Montparnasse and often known as Kiki de Montparnasse, was a French model during the Jazz Age. She flourished and helped define the liberated culture of Paris in the so-called Roaring Twenties. She became one of the most famous models of the 20th century and in the history of avant-garde art. She was the professional muse of Man Ray and others. One wonders if they didn't coin the term "Muse" for her. She is crazy and is the ultimate woman of this boho period. The book is about the artists, writers, and entertainers in and around Montparnasse. Kiki was a part of that crowd. More than an impressive collection of captioned photos from its golden age, this is also a history of Montparnasse. The 1st illustration is a map of the neighborhood circa 1380. The last eight pages are detailed current maps showing the location and years of occupation of clubs, studios, cafes, and residences. This book is exemplary among books describing this period's art and literary scene. Billy Kluver and Julie Martin emphasize "the reliance on factual information and the visual density of the photographs" in the preface. They are the foundation of this in-depth and fascinating exploration of Montparnasse. Extensive photos capture places, people, and art of Montparnasse, many of which came from private collections. The writing is equally as revealing, sharing anecdotes and details from varied sources, including interviews with members of this community.
