12mo, 5 x 2 3/4 inches (125 x 70 MM); 196 pp. Engraved frontispiece image of a naked Eros with a basket of hearts and an inscription "Je cherche un Coeur fidèle" (I'm searching for a faithful Heart); rubricated title page. Later red morocco binding by Quinet (gilt stamped on dentelle), triple gilt fillet frames on boards, raised bands with gilt decorations in compartments and gilt title, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g.

Jean-Jacques Quesnot de La Chênée (c. 1664 - 1708) was a French playwright and theater manager. Son of a Protestant minister, he fled France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes which had permitted Protestants some liberties. He moved to Denmark and later to The Hague and Brussels in the first years of the 18th century where he managed to stage some plays.
