First American edition of Verve no. 35/36, published in 1958 (as was the Verve edition) by Harcourt, Brace
Co and printed in France with color lithographs of the cut-paper collages by Mourlot Freres and b/w heliogravures of the related drawings plus typography by Draeger Freres. With essays by Pierre Reverdy and Geoges Duthuit in English. The 40 original color lithographs, all printed on recto on heavy paper with titles printed in block letters on verso, are indexed in French at the rear; 27 are solo plates, 8 are bound as the center sheets in their gathers, 2 are fold-out triptychs, and 3 are quadruple fold-outs. Included are reproductions of many of Matisse’s most famous cut-outs: Blue Nudes, Sadness of the King, Swimming Pool, mural with masks, mural with fruit, designs for the stained glass windows in Venice, and images from the Jazz book. Large 4to (14.5” x 10.75”), pictorial boards with pictorial dust jacket from an original design by Matisse, who began the project in 1954 shortly before his death; 184 pages with color and b/w illustrations. Creasing to lower corner of only one leaf, pp. 69-70. Content otherwise NF. Dj fully split at front joint, partially split at rear joint; it remains visually seamless within the protective cover. Moderate bumping and rubbing to dj, with three small closed tears to front cover, and limited open tears to spine ends. Minor bumping and rubbing to extremities; paper spine detached. Notwithstanding, A complete and very presentable copy of a high water mark of twentieth century book art, now protected in a mylar cover.

Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869, in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France. At 22, he had given up studying law in Paris to pursue painting. He had briefly studied art at the Académie Julian and Ecole des Beaux-Arts with Gustave Moreau. At 32, Matisse exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, where he met Maurice de Vlaminck, who with Matisse would eventually lead the Fauve art movement. Matisse's work was included in the 1913 Armory Show in New York, and throughout the 1910s and into the 1920s, his work began to find collectors around the world. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he divided his time between Paris and southern France, producing paintings, sculpture, lithographs, and etchings. Like many avant-garde artists in Paris, Matisse was receptive to a broad range of influences, particularly 'primitive' art, Near Eastern decorative art, African masks and sculpture, impressionist color, cubism, and the paintings of Paul Cezanne. The artist's images of the human face and figure -rendered in fluid lines and flat fields of color- typify these influences. Matisse argued for the prominence of instinct in art production, believing that an artist should not have complete control over color and form. He died on November 3, 1954, in Nice.
