About the Item
This is a rare example of a "Shima-cho", which is a Japanese kimono textile fabric swatch book dating from the late 19th century. The book has fifteen pages with between 280 and 300 fabric samples of hand spun cottons with a vegatable Indigo dye. They were made either to be used as a commercial sample book or they were kept as records of a families own designs and weaves. It is a remarkable historical record and will be of much interest to collectors of textiles or those who are involved with textile design in the 21st century.
