Davis, Burke. Marine! The Life of Chesty Puller. Boston and Toronto: Little brown and Co. 1962. First edition signed and inscribed by “Chesty” Puller. This first edition of Burke Davis’ biography of Lewis B. (Chesty) Puller is signed and inscribed by Puller on August 10, 1962. The inscription reads, “Pittsburgh, Pa. 10 August, 1962 To Walt B. Dusk, with great admiration and appreciation to the U.S. Marines. Best wishes, L. B. Puller.” Published simultaneously in Boston and Toronto, the book has original green cloth boards, original dust jacket, and a matching custom built clamshell. Retired Lieutenant General Chesty Puller was one of the most famous and celebrated US Marines. Nicknamed for his wide barrel-like chest, Puller fought in Haiti, Nicaragua, WWII, and the Korean War. He is the most decorated Marine in American History and was awarded two Navy Crosses and one Army Distinguished Service Cross. Known for his tough spirit and blunt quotes, Puller was beloved by the people under his command often foregoing the luxuries of his higher rank to eat, march, and sleep like his men. When during WWI, he dropped out of the Virginia Military Institute to enlist in the Marines, Puller said he wanted to, “go where the guns are.” After passing away in 1971, he is still mentioned as one of the most inspirational Marines in American history. This biography takes the reader through the life and accomplishments of Chesty Puller, assembled from meticulous research, interviews with Puller himself, and interviews with his contemporaries. Condition: Overall good condition. The original green boards have gilt embossing on the spine and a blind stamp on the front cover. Some light sunning on the top edge, slight bumping on the spine, but otherwise the boards are without tears, bends, or soiling. First end paper is inscribed and signed by Chesty Puller in black, dark ink. The original dust jacket is protected by a mylar cover and has been repaired and is in overall good condition. The archival custom quarter leather clamshell has matching green cloth and a central recess with a photograph of Puller featured on one side. The spine is decorated with gilt embossed decorative patterns with the title and author, as well as ribbing. Dimensions: 9.75” H x 7” W x 2.5” D (with clamshell).
