A comprehensive and seminal work on garden design by Edith Wharton (1862 – 1937), the writer who best portrayed the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. She was also the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Age of Innocence in 1921. Being part of the New York 'aristocracy' she often traveled to Europe and wrote extensively about her travels. This book explores more than seventy-five villas and is a testament to the passionate connoisseurship of one of America's great writers. It is a comprehensive look at the history and character of Italian garden architecture and ornamentation, capturing what Wharton calls their "garden-magic" and illuminating the intimate relationship between the house, its formal gardens, and the surrounding countryside. Wharton's text is accompanied by 26 color illustrations by Maxfield Parrish (1870 – 1966) , the American painter and illustrator known for his distinctive saturated hues and idealized neoclassical imagery, and by 26 period black white photographs.
