The Mind and Art of Giovanni Piranesi by John Wilton-Ely. London: Thames and Hudson, 1988. Stated first edition paperback. 155 pp. A portfolio of the artwork and history of artist Giovani Piranesi. Piranesi was an Italian artist famous for his etchings of Rome and fictitious atmospheric visions. He was a student of architecture, etching and engraving. In the age of Enlightenment he traveled throughout Europe learning new forms of artistic expression including architectural fantasy. One of his distinctive talents was to create a Classical antiquity including vases, altars and tombs that didn't exist in reality.
