My Experiences in the World War by John Pershing, Signed Limited Edition. Two Volume Set, 1931 Pershing, John, My Experiences in the World War. New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1931. Signed limited edition, two volume set. Octavo, bound in quarter leather and cloth with a matching slipcase. This is the two volume, limited edition set of John Pershing’s personal memoir including the author’s autograph on the edition page. It is copy 2,011 out of 2,100 copies produced. It was published by the Frederick A. Stokes Company out of New York. Tucked into the leaves are newspaper clippings from the New York Times from 1931, including “A German Reply to Gen. Pershing’s War Story” and “Pershing and the World War: His Memoirs of the A.E.F. Reviewed by Captain Liddell Hart,” and the 1940 Tribune article “Pershing for Naval Aid to Lindbergh Asks for U.S. Peace.” The articles are folded into a protective plastic sleeve. The book features 69 reproductions from black and white photographs and numerous maps, including a photo by the Signal Corps, U.S.A. of General Pershing. The book is dedicated by the author to “the Unknown Soldier.” Pershing was Commander in Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces. This two volume set covers the details of Pershing’s role in the American Expeditionary Forces, German Spring Offensive of 1918, and Allied cooperation after the Spring Offensive. The work is compiled from Pershing’s personal memories and experiences during World War I. Pershing’s memoir received the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1932. Written by Pershing in the Forward; "My primary purpose in writing this story of the American Expeditionary Forces in France is to render what I conceive to be an important service to my country. In that adventure there were many lessons useful to the American People, should they ever again be called to arms, and I felt it a duty to record them as I saw them." Condition: This two volume set is in very good condition and features a deckle edge, gilt top edge, and marble endpapers. The pages are clean with no signs of foxing or significant staining. The books have been rebound in a beautiful black quarter Morocco leather binding and gray cloth boards with gilt tooling along the binding edge and the spine. The spine features decorative motifs and raised bands. The front boards for each volume have gilt titles from the original boards pasted in the center. The two volumes are offered in a custom cloth slipcase, which features a photograph of General Pershing on the front board.
