Old Masters, New World, America's Raid on Europe's Great Pictures (1800-WWI) by Cynthia Saltzman. New York: The Penguin Group, Inc., 2008. Hardcover with dust jacket. 324. A fascinating book on the Americans who, during the end of the 19th century, bought Raphaels, Rembrandts, Titians, Vermeers, and other Old Masters paintings. It was a time when the United States became a wealthy world power setting in motion a transatlantic migration of art. In the 1880s the railroad financier Henry Gurdon Marquand journeyed to England in pursuit of outstanding works of art for New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Soon others jumped into the market driving prices up and drawing dazzling pieces from private collections, many from financially squeezed English aristocrats.
