Mortimer Menpes (1855 – 1938) was an Australian-born painter, author, printmaker and illustrator who traveled widely and lived in England from his 20s. In 1880, during a sketching tour in Brittany, he befriended, and became a "disciple" of James McNeill Whistler. Menpes traveled widely and often returned from his travels to mount exhibitions of his work.
This hefty book features 75 of Menpes' works, recording famous Paris landmarks as well as scenes of everyday life like markets, factories and street scenes. Chapters and sections are marked with charming line drawings and the text is written by his daughter, Dorothy Menpes, who was Whistler's godchild.
