Van Vechten turned to photography in 1932 at the age of fifty-one. In his thirty years of photo-taking, he accumulated a distinctive body of work which bears his personal mark. This book is profusely illustrated with black-and-white finely reproduced photographs, which mainly consist of portraitures. Van Vechten often times knows his sitters personally and chooses specific props to highlight an aspect of their personalities, on other occasions, he used simple draping fabrics or a small corner of a room to give the sitter’s posture and gaze room for expression. Through Van Vechten’s lens, we gain fresh insights into the personal and cultural vitality of his time and surroundings.
