Federalist, on the New Constitution, a New Edition, 1818
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Hamilton, Alexander, James Madison, and John Jay. The Federalist, on the New Constitution. Written in the Year 1788 by Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Madison, and Mr. Jay with an Appendix, Containing the Letters of Pacificus and Helvidius, on the Proclamation of Neutrality of 1793; Also, the Original Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution of the United States, with Amendments Made Thereto. A New Edition. The Numbers Written by Mr. Madison Corrected by Himself. City of Washington: Jacob Gideon, 1818. Large 8vo. Recently rebound in full two-tone Oxford paneled calf leather, with gilt and blind tooling to the spine, and a new archival slipcase to match. Presented is a handsome 1818 “New Edition” of the most important work of American political thought ever written, The Federalist. According to Thomas Jefferson, the Federalist papers were "the best commentary on the principles of government." This “New Edition” was published in June of 1818 by Jacob Gideon, in the City of Washington. It identifies Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison as the authors, with Madison’s authorship attributed for the first time to several pieces previously attributed to Hamilton. As Hamilton had submitted corrections to earlier 1788 and 1802 editions, Gideon asserts that this edition, now with Madison’s edits, is "confidently presented to the public as a standard edition." The Federalist comprises the collected printing of the eighty-five seminal essays written in defense of the newly-drafted Constitution. Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay first issued the essays individually under the pseudonym “Publius” to garner support for the ratification of the Constitution. The essays were published primarily in two New York newspapers, The New York Packet and The Independent Journal, but were also reprinted in other newspapers in New York state and in several other states as well. Upon its publication, George Washington noted to Alexander Hamilton that the work "will merit the Notice of Posterity; because in it are candidly and ably discussed the principles of freedom and the topics of government, which will always be interesting to mankind" (George Washington, letter to Hamilton, 28 August 1788). The genesis of this "classic exposition of the principles of republican government" is to be found in the "great national discussion" which took place about the ratification of the Constitution, and the necessity of answering the salvos in print from the Anti-Federalists and other opponents of a strong Federal government. The success and high demand for the newspaper essays warranted their publication in a more permanent form. Intentions to publish a bound edition with revisions and corrections by Hamilton, to satisfy “politicians and persons of every description,”was first announced by New York printers J. & A. McLean on January 1, 1788. Volume I was published in March 1788 and contained the first 36 numbered essays. Volume II, published in May of 1788, included the remaining essays, including the final eight which had not yet appeared in the newspapers, together with the text of the Constitution. In 1802, the second American edition was published by George Hopkins...
