London: John Lane: The Bodley Head, 1898. Sixth Edition. 8vo, 7 3/8 x 4 1/2 inches (187 x 118 mm), (8), 108 pp, printed on cream laid paper, evenly toned. Full tan calf binding by Zaehnsdorf (stamp at bottom of f.f.l. verso) with gilt borders, gilt board edges, decorative turn-ins, marbled endpapers, spine with 4 raised bands, richly gilt with floral motifs, gilt title on blue calf label, small chip at head of spine and mild rubbing at corners; t.e.g., rest deckled. Internally clean and fresh, firmly bound.
Stephen Phillips was an English poet and dramatist. He enjoyed considerable popularity in his career and this anthology earned him great popularity. It was first published in 1897 had already reached its 6th edition the following year. It contains a new edition of 'Christ in Hades' together with 'Marpessa', 'The Woman with the Dead Soul', 'The Wife', as well as shorter pieces such as 'To Milton - Blind'. When it was first published in 1897, this collection of poetry won £100 from the Academy Newspaper for the best new book of the year.
