The Rejection Collection: Cartoons You Never Saw, and Never Will See, in The New Yorker by Matthew Diffee and intro by Robert Mankoff. New York: Gallery Books, 2006. Stated 1st ed hardcover with dust jacket. We are all used to enjoying more than 20 cartoons in each issue of the New Yorker Magazine. These are chosen from ten ideas, submitted weekly, by some 50 New Yorker cartoonists. This book is an anthology of "the rejects" from known contributors edited by Matthew Diffee (himself a contributing cartoonist since 1999), and a foreword from Cartoon Editor Robert Mankoff of some 20 years. 264 pp. of hilarious rejected cartoons, accompanied by handwritten questionnaires and photographed self-portraits, providing a glimpse into humor, usually in fun, but at times it can be unintentionally inappropriate and best not be published.
