Roy Lichtenstein helped usher in the pop art movement in America in the 1960s with his large-scale paintings of comic-book panels and his deadpan renditions of consumer-product advertising images and the rituals of domestic life. Borrowing the bold black outlines and bright primary colours of ads and the comics in the halftone dots of newsprint, Lichtenstein created a visual syntax that was new in American art. Through his merging of popular imagery and "high" art, and other transgressions of traditional aesthetic conventions, Lichtenstein has become one of the contemporary art world's most enduring and important figures. This comprehensive monograph, published on the occasion of a major retrospective organized at the Guggenheim Museum by Diane Waldman, the museum's Deputy Director and Senior Curator, is a definative investigation of Lichtenstein's painting and sculpture from the 195s through the present, produced with the full cooperation of the artist. 394pages. 3620 grams.
