About the Item
Taking One's Own Ship Around the World. A journal descriptive of scenes and incidents, together with observations from the log book. Recorded on the Voyage Around the World October 25, 1928 to May 16, 1929 of the Yacht Ara, Written and Signed by William K. Vanderbilt. This is a First edition of Vanderbilt’s account of his voyage around the world aboard the diesel yacht Ara. Bound in the original brown buckram, with gilt titles and tooling on the spine, and a gilt top edge with pictorial endpapers. Illustrated with colored engravings after photographs by Wiliam E. Belanske, Pierre C. Merillon, Charles H. Thompson, and Wm. Vanderbilt with 18 color plates protected with lettered tissue guards, after watercolors by William E. Belankse. One of only 500 copies printed and 300 bound in buckram, this is number 337. This book was given to Lawrence Waterbury who was an American champion polo player and society figure. Waterbury became a stockbroker and, reportedly, made a fortune in the 1907 bear market, also known as the Panic of 1907. William Kissam "Willie" Vanderbilt I was an American heir, businessman, philanthropist as well as a horse breeder. The connection to Waterbury was through his horse breeding.
