Roosevelt, Theodore. The Winning of the West, in Six Volumes. New York: The Current Literature, 1905. In original suede leather spines over buckram bindings, with embossed titles to spine. Presented with a new archival slipcase. The Winning of the West is a multi-volume work by Theodore Roosevelt in which he offers his account of the story of U.S. westward expansion and settlement. The first edition was published in six, small octavo volumes by G.P. Putnam's, from 1889 to 1896. In addition to the first edition, Knickerbocker Press published a collectible four volume set in 1900 and Putnam published a limited Daniel Boone edition of only 200 copies in the same year. Public interest in The Winning of the West flourished during Rosevelt’s presidency, resulting in this set of six volumes, issued in a smaller format and published by The Current Literature in 1905. The Winning of the West represents an epic history of the American frontier in the 18th and early 19th centuries, to include the Indian Wars, wilderness hunters, pioneers, with commentary on the American spirit. The six volumes included: Volume I: “The Spread of English Speaking Peoples,” Volume II: “In the Current of The Revolution,” Volume III: “The War in the Northwest,” Volume IV: “The Indian Wars, 1784-1787, Franklin, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee,” Volume V: “St. Clair and Wayne,” and Volume VI: “Louisiana and Aaron Burr.” Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (1858 – 1919) was an American statesman, conservationist, naturalist, and historian, who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. Roosevelt was a prolific author, writing more than 18 books during his lifetime, beginning with The Naval War of 1812 in 1882. His other notable works include Winning of the West, African Game Trails, and The Rough Riders. CONDITION: Six volumes, octavo. In original suede leather spines over buckram bindings, with embossed titles to spine. Very good condition, with slight damage on the spine of Vol. I. Embossed lettering on spines is present though slightly faded. Joints have been stabilized. Interior is clean and undamaged. Frontispiece illustrations in each volume. Tissue protected illustrations in each volume. Presented with a new archival lined slipcase with ribbon and inlaid portrait of Roosevelt on the front. Each volume measures: 7 1/4” H x 4 5/8" W.
