A publishing collaboration between Gagosian Gallery and Phaidon. An in-depth study of painters’ and photographers’ studios with examples from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries. Introductory essays and catalogue entries on individual works by two experts in their respective fields—John Elderfield for In the Studio: Paintings and Peter Galassi for In the Studio: Photographs. Since then, it has grown from a single exhibition space in Los Angeles to fourteen distinct spaces in eight cities around the world. Specializing in modern and contemporary art, Gagosian Gallery maintains a distinguished historical program and a roster of the world’s most acclaimed living artists. John Elderfield, a Consultant at Gagosian Gallery, is Chief Curator Emeritus of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, where he directed numerous celebrated exhibitions, among them Kurt Schwitters, Henri Matisse: A Retrospective, and De Kooning: A Retrospective, and the more specialized Manet and the Execution of Maximilian and Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913–1917. He is the recipient of Harkness and John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships; of the first Mitchell Prize for an outstanding publication on twentieth-century art; and has been a visiting scholar at the Getty Research Institute and the American Academy in Rome. In 2005, Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People of the Year; and in 2006 was awarded an honorary D. Litt. from The University of Leeds, and was made Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government. Peter Galassi retired from The Museum of Modern Art in 2011 after thirty years at the museum, including twenty as Chief Curator of Photography.
