Bound in full vellum, with decorative gilt stamps, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, and illustrated endpapers. This is the first limited edition printing of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Published by Cassell Company in 1911 with only 250 copies printed in this deluxe style of vellum gilt, this book is numbered “49” on the edition page. Stevenson's great adventure at sea is further brought to life in this printing through the vivid and evocative illustrations of John Cameron. Treasure Island was serialized in Young Folks, a popular children’s magazine publication, between 1881 and 1882 under the title The Sea Cook and under the pseudonym “Captain George North.” It was inspired by a detailed map of an island that Stevenson and his stepson drew one rainy day, complete with hidden treasure and cryptic instructions. Treasure Island was first published in book form in London by Cassell and Company on November 14, 1883, in an edition of only 2000 copies. The serial publication was not well-received, but on its appearance in book form the story was hailed as the best tale of adventure in print. "The force of invention and vividness of narrative appealed to every reader" (DNB). This is one of the greatest literary adventure classics of all time, beautifully presented here in binding, text, and illustration. The book is bound, as issued in 1911, in the publisher's original full vellum, ornately decorated in gilt to the spine and to the front cover with full gilt border work, maritime images, and titles. The top edge is gilt and the book boasts green and cream pictorial endpapers. Inside, the printed pages of text are on Aldwych water-marked paper. The book is illustrated throughout with 12 full-page color plates, including the frontispiece, mounted on dark thick card stock, all with captioned tissue guards. A black and red copy of the author's original treasure map is facing page 3. Condition: Very good condition. Octavo. Bound in full vellum, decoratively stamped in gilt. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Illustrated endpapers. Tip of front board bottom corner scorched. Internally very clean, with all plates present. Numbered “49” in ink on the edition page. (viii), 340 pp. Illustrated with frontispiece and 11 tipped-in color plates on black paper by John Cameron, with captioned tissue guards. One map facing pp. 3. Presented with a new archival red cloth slipcase with illustration on the front.
