This Book Club edition of We Seven by The Astronauts Themselves is signed by Cooper, Slayton, Schirra, Grissom, Glenn, Shepard, and James Lovell on the first free endpaper. Cooper and Lovell inscribed “to Dave Jameson all best wishes” and “To Dave: Smooth flying!” respectively. The original dust jacket is included and the book is housed in a custom clamshell. This book follows the journey of America’s first astronauts on their manned space flight. Named Project Mercury, the project was a direct result of America’s frenzied Space Race with Russia to get the first man to the Moon. Project Mercury aimed to successfully and safely send the first American into space and had three specific objectives: orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth, investigate man’s ability to function in space, and recover both man and spacecraft safely. The book details the astronauts’ first-hand accounts of the project from breaking through Earth’s atmosphere to the sheer panic after a hatch blows. Including black and white photographs, the authors give a personal perspective to an historic event that explored how people can live in space, how to operate in orbit, and provided the basis for all successive space programs. Condition: Overall very good condition. Signatures vary in colors and are all clear and dark. The book includes six of the seven author signatures as well as James Lovell, one of the first men to orbit the Moon. The original gray boards with black embossing are slightly worn with bumping to the spine, wear on the corners, and loosening binding. The pages have orange coloring along the top and deckled edges. Despite one dent on the top of the pages, they are in very good condition with no signs of foxing or tears. The dust jacket has been repaired from small tears and creases along the edges and is now in a protective mylar cover. The custom archival quarter leather red and black clamshell is decorated on the spine with gilt embossing. The front cover has a recess with a photograph of the first seven astronauts.
