About the Item

THACKERAY, William Makepeace. The Complete Works. The Trinity College Edition. London / New York, 1901. 26 volumes, octavo. One of only twenty-six registered copies, lettered A–Z; this set being Copy H. A magnificent and exceedingly rare private-press edition of Thackeray’s complete works, issued in a strictly limited lettered edition of just twenty-six sets. Each volume finely bound in full red morocco, gilt-decorated spines with repeating floral and crown devices, raised bands, gilt rules, and gilt turn-ins; top edges gilt; marbled endpapers. Illustrated throughout with plates and vignettes as issued. The limitation leaf, present and intact, states: “The Trinity College Edition of the Complete Works of William Makepeace Thackeray is limited to twenty-six registered copies, of which this is Copy H.” Lettered limitation in red ink. An exceptional survival, the set is complete in all 26 volumes, uniformly bound, and well preserved, with sound hinges and clean interiors, showing only light, expected wear commensurate with age. A true private edition of extreme scarcity, produced in a far smaller limitation than the more commonly encountered Trinity College issues. Rare. Complete lettered sets of this edition are seldom encountered on the market, and represent the finest and most exclusive early twentieth-century collected edition of Thackeray’s works.
