About the Item
The Works of Harriet Beecher Stowe
The Riverside Edition
Houghton, Mifflin
Co., Riverside Press, Boston, 1896
Complete in seventeen volumes (the sixteen-volume edition issued in the publisher’s original split format)
A magnificent late-nineteenth-century uniform edition of the collected works of Harriet Beecher Stowe, one of the most influential authors in American literary history. This elegant Riverside Edition was issued by Houghton, Mifflin
Company at the Riverside Press and represents the publisher’s definitive collected edition of Stowe’s writings at the height of her international reputation.
Bound in full publisher’s deluxe leather, each volume is richly tooled in gilt on the spine with floral devices and titles, and lettered in gold. The set retains its original uniform appearance, presenting as a cohesive and highly decorative private-library collection. The volumes include Stowe’s most important works, including Uncle Tom’s Cabin (in two volumes), Dred, The Minister’s Wooing, Oldtown Folks, Agnes of Sorrento, The Pearl of Orr’s Island, Life and Letters, and numerous other novels, essays, and sketches, forming a comprehensive record of her literary career.
This set is issued in seventeen physical volumes, reflecting the publisher’s original division of one of the longer works into two parts, a known and correct format for this Riverside Edition. The set is therefore complete and original, not assembled or altered.
Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896) was the most famous American woman writer of the nineteenth century. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was the best-selling novel of its era and is widely regarded as one of the most influential books in American history, shaping public opinion on slavery and contributing to the moral climate that led to the Civil War. Her collected works remain foundational to American literary and cultural history.
This Riverside Edition is particularly prized for its combination of scholarly completeness, fine manufacture, and striking visual presence. Large, intact leather-bound sets of Stowe’s works are increasingly scarce in the market, especially in matching original bindings of this quality.
A handsome and important collector’s set, equally suitable for a distinguished private library, institutional collection, or refined interior.
