Presented is a handsome printing of The Works of Lord Alfred Tennyson, Poet Laureate. First published in 1894, this “Complete Edition” is a later reprint, published in London by Macmillan and Co. in 1926. It is elegantly bound by Riviere, in full leather boards with raised bands, gilt tooling to the spine and boards, gilt dentelle, and marbled endpapers.
This is a classic collection of poetry by one of Britain's most celebrated poets of the Victorian era, Lord Afred Tennyson. Tennyson (1809- 1892) is renowned for his exploration of classical and mythological themes. In 1829, Tennyson was awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal at Cambridge for one of his first pieces, "Timbuktu." He gained widespread attention when he published his first solo collection of poems Poems, Chiefly Lyrical in 1830. "Claribel" and "Mariana", two of Tennyson's most celebrated poems, were included in this volume. He later secured his literary reputation with Poems (1842), which included enduring works such as “Ulysses,” “The Lady of Shalott,” and “Morte d’Arthur.”
In 1850, Tennyson was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, a position he held for over forty years. During his tenure, he composed several official works, including “Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington” and “The Charge of the Light Brigade.” In 1884, he was the first poet to be awarded a peerage by Queen Victoria, as Baron Tennyson of Aldworth and Freshwater.
A number of Teenyson’s best-known poems relate to his lifelong interest in the legends of King Arthur, including “The Lady of Shalott,” “Sir Galahad,” and “Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere,” “Morte d’Arthur,” and “Idylls of the King.” Other well-known poems were based on classical mythological themes, such as "Ulysses" and "The Lotos-Eaters". His legacy endures today through his influence on English literature and his ability to give poetic, introspective voice to Victorian-era anxieties surrounding faith, loss, and constant passage of time.
CONDITION:
Good condition overall. Full leather binding with raised bands, gilt tooling along spine and boards, gilt dentelle, marbled paper pastedowns. “Bound by Riviere” is printed in black block text on the front free endpaper. Previous owner’s inscription and raised stamp on free endpaper. Frontispiece by GJ Stodart based on a photograph by Mayall. Very clean internally, with no notable condition issues.
