About the Item
Senufo/baule Locking Currency Bracelet: a time honored texture and form define this Senufo sculptural object. The abstract etchings were achieved through a process known as scarification. The artisan meticulously traced and retraced their patterns on the bronze surface to create the defined ridges. Hinged and fastened with a clasp over the wrist, a woman of status used this bracelet as both ceremonial accessory and as an expression of her wealth. It originates from the Ivory Coast and was made by hand in the 19th century.
