About the Item

A rare Art Deco Gemey compact by Richard Hudnut with it's original box and dating to the 1930's. The front of the compact is enamelled in a cream and black colouring with a stylized foliate design in chrome running through the centre. The back of the compact is chrome and engine turned with geometric lines with the word 'Gemey', and down the other side with wavy lines and the words 'Richard Hudnut Made in USA'. Inside the compact is a mirror and powder and rouge wells containing the original powder puffs, each marked 'Gemey'. There are some remnants of face powder, but the original rouge remains fully intact and is embossed with the name 'Richard Hudnut'. The base of the box has a label giving the shade of the powder as Naturelle and the rouge as Radiant Red. Bio Richard Hudnut died at Juan-les-Pins, France, at the age of 73 (June 2, 1855 – October 30, 1928) Around 1880, a small pharmacy was opened in New York city and sold perfumes, cosmetics and assorted toiletries. Richard Hudnut, the son of the proprietor of the shop, became the first American selling luxury perfume presentations, (though some of these were created in France) in an elegant shop which was directly influenced by the French and European perfumeries. Richard Hudnut’s legacy is based on his creation of perfumery and cosmetics of notable quality, which were presented in distinctively decorated, and packaged containers. These beautiful and artful containers made Richard Hudnut perfumes and cosmetics still very collectable today. The Richard Hudnut business was then acquired by William R. Warner Co which, in 1955, became the Warner-Lambert Pharmaceuticals Co., which was later acquired by Parke-Davis in 1970, which, in turn, was merged into Pfizer in 2000.
