About the Item
Dated to the late 19th century, this silver charm ring was crafted by the Miao peoples of the Guizhou province and was believed to protect the wearer from bad luck and malevolent spirits. The ring is decorated in relief with a round gourd and a butterfly, surrounded by clouds and small flowers. This motif of a butterfly and a gourd was popular during the Qing dynasty and conveys blessings for a large family with many sons. A short chain hangs from the face of the ring, ending in a small repoussé bell shaped as a round gourd or melon, furthering the motif.
