About the Item

A romantic globe de mariée featuring a gilt-metal floral and foliate frame with applied daisy motifs, symbolic leaves, and a perched bird, surrounding an oval red velvet cushion inset with mirrors in ornate frames. Once protected under a glass dome, this sentimental keepsake was traditionally gifted to newlyweds in France to preserve mementoes of their union. This globe de mariée (wedding globe) belongs to a distinct tradition of French domestic and sentimental art of the second half of the 19th century. Such objects, typically displayed under a protective glass dome, were offered at the time of marriage and used to preserve symbolic tokens of the wedding ceremony—bouquets, tiaras, or souvenirs—nestled into the velvet-covered cushion at the centre. The frame of this example is composed of gilt-metal flowers, notably daisies (symbols of innocence and purity), vine leaves (associated with fertility), and a perched bird poised at the crest, an emblem of love and fidelity. Two small framed mirrors enrich the composition: these often carried symbolic readings—the rectangular mirrors could represent domestic happiness or reflect the couple’s shared future, while the oval mirrors suggested eternal union. The red velvet base speaks to passion and constancy, while the dangling ornaments allude to prosperity. The piece rests on an ebonized wood base, with traces of wear consistent with age, testifying to its authentic domestic function. Beyond its decorative allure, it embodies a crucial chapter in French 19th-century sentimental culture, where marriage was not only a social contract but also a ritual enshrined in objects that reinforced ideals of fidelity, prosperity, and family continuity. Today, such globes de mariée are appreciated both as decorative curiosities and as documents of social history, encapsulating the values, hopes, and intimate symbolism of bourgeois households in the Second Empireand Third Republic.
