About the Item

Rare 14ct Gold Pocket Watch by August Ericsson, St Petersburg, circa 1890 A rare and finely made late 19th century gold pocket watch by August Ericsson (1842–1910), the highly regarded Swedish-born horologist and retailer active in St Petersburg, Imperial Russia. Ericsson was supplier of marine chronometers and precision timepieces to the Imperial Russian Navy, and retailed high-grade watches using movements by Swiss firms such as Ulysse Nardin, Victor Kullberg and IWC. This example is a beautifully crafted small-size savonnette (hunter-case) pocket watch, cased in solid 14 carat yellow gold, with fine engine-turned decoration. The case interior is stamped with the Swiss squirrel hallmark for 14ct gold, maker’s mark MK56, and serial number 5824. The inner dust cover is engraved Aug. Ericsson No. 31695, matching the numbered movement. The white enamel dial is signed AUG. ERICSSON, with elegant Arabic numerals, finely pierced gold hands and subsidiary seconds. The movement is a high-grade Swiss jewelled movement, as typical of Ericsson’s commissions, and is in running order. Measurements: 30 mm diameter, 42 mm including bow, 7 mm thick. Weight: 27.2 grams. Condition: The case presents well with gentle wear, minor small knocks and marks consistent with age. Light scratches to glass. The inner dust cover is present but has detached from its hinge — it remains in place but does not hinge open. The movement is running well at time of listing. A rare and desirable example of a fine Imperial-era gold pocket watch, with strong collector interest internationally.
