MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Mint 1997 Omas “Return to the Motherland” limited edition 18k gold fountain pen
Located in Weesp, NL
1997 OMAS Return to the Motherland Limited Edition Fountain Pen Solid 18K Gold · No. 063/200 · 123g · Mint Full Set w/ Original 1997 Red Ink A rare and historically weighted masterpiece — this 1997 OMAS Return to the Motherland fountain pen was created to honor the handover of Hong Kong from British to Chinese governance, marking one of the most significant geopolitical transitions of the 20th century. Only 200 examples were produced worldwide, each individually numbered. This piece is No. 063/200, preserved in mint, uninked condition, and complete with every original component. Crafted entirely in 18 karat gold and weighing an impressive 123 grams, the pen is sculpted in deep high-relief — a tactile narrative rendered directly into precious metal. Sculptural Symbolic Detail • Imperial Dragon in full sculptural relief — symbol of prosperity, sovereignty and protection • Flowing silk texture motifs — referencing millennia of Chinese heritage and continuity • Engraved Great Wall — endurance, culture, identity, the spine of civilization • Pink/White Dolphins — indigenous to Hong Kong waters, symbols of harmony, freedom, renewal • Red lacquer grip and finial — the color of fortune, vitality and auspicious beginnings in Chinese culture These elements are not printed — they are carved, dimensional and alive with symbolism. A writing instrument that feels like a piece of sculpture. Nib — Two-Tone Gold with Commemorative Engraving The pen is fitted with a two-tone 18K gold nib — white finished (rhodium/platinum over 18K) with inlaid yellow-gold dragon details and engraved: “HONG KONG 1997” Also signed OMAS · 18K This feature alone makes the edition unmistakable: culturally specific, commemorative, and produced at a level of craftsmanship few modern pens approach. Complete, Original Presentation ✔ No. 063/200 ✔ Inner and outer boxes (deep red, gold accents) ✔ Commemorative gold-plated display case...

Sergio Bustamante Signed Sterling Sun Moon Link Bracelet, Rare Edition, 1980s
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Sergio Bustamante Signed Sterling Silver Sun and Moon Link Bracelet, Mexico, 1980s Dimensions: 7.5" L x 0.5" W Weight: 32 grams Marks: “925 MEX” and “DB-925” (Sergio Bustamante maker's mark) A sculptural, celestial-themed bracelet by celebrated Mexican artist Sergio Bustamante, crafted in sterling silver. The piece features alternating links of expressive sun faces and crescent moons, each individually modeled with Bustamante’s signature surrealist features. The three-dimensional sun medallions radiate stylized flames, while the moons are cast with distinct facial features, gazing thoughtfully to the side. This work is clearly signed with the Bustamante hallmark “DB-925” on the reverse of each sun element and also marked “MEX 925.” The bracelet fastens securely with a hidden hook-style clasp, consistent with mid- to late-20th-century Mexican artisan jewelry. A superb and rare example of Bustamante's wearable art, this bracelet stands out for both its craftsmanship and its whimsical yet mystical iconography—perfect for collectors of Mexican modernism or celestial-themed adornments. Further Documentation: DB-925 MEX This is a known signature mark associated with Sergio Bustamante’s sterling...

Bespoken Leather Belt with Sculptural Sterling Buckles Graziella Laffi
Located in Atlanta, GA
A wide leather belt with sterling silver buckle and matching ornaments crafted by Graziella Laffi (1923-2009), Lima, Peru, circa 1965. The prominent silver articles feature the shape and motif rooted in pre-Columbian culture that inspired the artist's work. Mark on verso: PERU 950, extended size is 47 x 3 inches (119.4 x 7.6 cm) and weight is about 428 grams. Belt length adjustable between 27 to 38 inches. This lot with partially effaced Peruvian Cultural Ministry label to verso. Graziella Laffi was born in 1923 in Florence, Italy to Gino Laffi, a silversmith and artist. Following her family tradition, Graziella enrolled in master classes after elementary school, focusing on design and painting. She next attended Escuela de Bellas Artes de Puerta Romana for three years, where Gino taught, and then to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, where she concentrated in architecture until the start of World War II. In 1947, Graziella, then twenty-four, immigrated with her parents to Peru. Gino later created a silversmith studio and showroom called Fabrica Laffi on Avenue Mexico, where Graziella initially learned her Craft. The Pre-Columbian culture in her adopted country inspired Graziella to travel and collect, which ultimately influence her design in the silver pieces. Graziella learned the metalworking techniques of the ancient Peruvian civilizations and rejected the current technology. She mostly used hammering, rolling and creating joints as the ancients do. As an ambassador of Peruvian culture, her work promoted the indigenous Peruvian art and rekindled the interest in its ancient heritage throughout South America, the United States and Europe. She exhibited her growing collection of Peruvian artifacts...
