Large Marble Table Solitaire Game with 37 Mineral Stone Marbles, circa 1920

This is a very decorative and complete board game of 37 hole marble solitaire with a large 12.75 inch diameter hardwood board and 37 beautiful individual mainly mineral or agate stone and some glass marbles, which we date to the early 20th century, probably of French origin. The circular turned board is made of Hardwood, possibly walnut having a very good grain pattern and with a gallery to the outer rim. There are 36 equi-spaced holes with an additional one in the centre. It comes complete with a full set of 37 (36 plus one spare) early handmade playing marbles. Early marbles are very collectable in their own right and the marbles in this set are very tactile and much larger than normal being nominally 15/16 inches in diameter. These are very decorative individual marbles made mainly from different types of agate stone, having a beautiful mix of different colors. Four of the marbles are made of different types of glass. Some of the marbles have wear to them, as expected. Popular in the court of Louis the XIV, the game was supposedly invented by a nobleman incarcerated in the Bastille in France during the 17th century and was popular in the court of Louis XIV. It is a challenging game for the fan of strategy and skill and became one of the more popular games of the last few hundred years. To play, place 36 marbles with one hole left unoccupied in the middle of the board. The objective is simply to remove all but one of the marbles by jumping one marble over another, similar to Draughts. The marble jumped is removed. Large 37 hole boards like this one are more decorative and rarer than the normal 33 hole boards. Mineral or Agate stone marbles are also harder to find, particularly in this larger size. This is one of the largest diameter boards we have had and is a substantial piece weighing well over 2 Kg unpacked, which makes this a really beautiful set, both for display and for playing.
