About the Item

This is a wonderful mid-century playing card box, most probably bakelite, featuring a small moveable pointer on the lid, above the words "NO TRUMPS." In a fabulous orange and cream swirl of colour. The box opens with a hinged lid and has two gaps on the bottom edge to make card retrieval easier. Inside are two vintage decks of playing cards, each with all four suits complete. One deck features a Peruvian coat of arms on the back and 52 different old city views of Peru, each named in Spanish; the second deck has a floral red and white cover with plain, unadorned images of the suits. This deck also includes a joker card. We do not believe the cards to be original to the box, but they are both vintage decks. Please note: the plastic has not been tested chemically, therefore we cannot guarantee that it is Bakelite, although visually it has the characteristics of that material.

This is a fabulous aesthetic movement mirror from the late 19th century, probably English. The frame is ebonized and decorated with incised, hand-painted and gilded decorations featuring floral swags and a lion mask on the top, and a lovely maiden on either side of the glass. The mirror glass is 7.5 inches square and bevelled, and has wonderful patina. There are five visible boreholes around the perimeter of the frame which would have held coat hooks that are now absent. This mirror exhibits all the hallmarks of the aesthetic movement, which flourished in England from 1860 to 1900.
