About the Item
This is a good quality handmade miniature or travelling wood chess set game of 32 pieces in its own inlaid walnut box, which we date to the early 20th century, circa 1930's.
The chess set is complete with 32 wood pieces having pegged bases. The circular box is handmade of wood, probably walnut with line inlays of a lighter wood to the lid top. The base section is fitted with the chess board and the lid is a good snug fit to the base section. The base has two removable side pegs that stop the lid closing on the chess pieces when the lid is on.
It is a very good feature of this chess set that the pieces can remain in place once the lid is fitted, so that the game can be resumed at a later time if required .
The inside of the lid has a fabric pad to keep the chess pieces in position when the lid is closed.
Chess set additional details:
The box is 5 inches diameter by 1~3/8 inches deep with the lid closed.
All pieces are nominally the same height of about 1.5cm excluding the spigot (peg) part that fits into the holes.
Overall a very attractive and well-made travelling chess set.

This is a good and complete English handmade wood "weighted" chess set game of 32 pieces, in its original box with a sliding lid, made by John Jaques of London and dating to the mid 20th century period.
The chess pieces are made of turned and carved varnished wood. The bases of ALL pieces are weighted with metal pieces and the bases have a green felt/paper cover.
Weighted sets like this one have a much nicer "feel" when playing.
The pieces in the set are in the Staunton style.
Sizes: Kings: 70mm ( ~ 2.75 inches); Pawns: ~45mm (~1.7 inches)
The set comes complete with its original wood storage box, having a sliding lid and complete with a paper makers sticker to the lid.
