About the Item

This important Southeast Asian bronze drum, dating to the 15th century or earlier, belongs to the historically significant classification known as Heger Type I, a form that marks the crucial transition between the ancient Dong Son tradition and the later “frog drums” that continued in ritual use throughout Southeast Asia. Drums of this type are among the earliest and most culturally meaningful achievements in regional bronze casting, valued both for their ceremonial role and their sophisticated metallurgy. The drum is powerfully modeled, with a broad, commanding form and a finely articulated surface decorated with concentric bands, raised bosses, and a central starburst motif. The patina is exceptionally rich and deeply developed, displaying layered tones that speak to centuries of natural oxidation and careful handling. Preservation is notably strong for an object of this age, with the structure remaining sound and the decorative elements clearly legible. Measuring approximately 18.75 inches in diameter and 10.5 inches in height, the drum is presented on a custom antique stand, bringing the total display height to approximately 33 inches. The stand shows expected age-related wear and minor losses, as visible in the photographs, but serves to elevate and stabilize the piece attractively. From an old Southern California collection, this drum stands as a visually striking and increasingly rare example of an early Heger Type I bronze—an object of genuine archaeological, historical, and sculptural importance.
