About the Item

19th Century Cast Iron Race Horse Bank by J E Stevens Co. 1871 USA, Circa 1871 This rare 19th-century cast iron Race Horse bank by J E Stevens Co., patented on August 15, 1871, is a beautifully patinated and finely crafted piece of Americana. Measuring 5 inches high, 6.75 inches wide, with a 4-inch base, this early example, possibly a first edition, showcases realistic racetrack features with its polychromed multicolored finish. While originally a coin-operated bank, the kinetic parts still move, although no longer activated by coins, adding a nostalgic charm to its display. J E Stevens, founded by John and Elisha Stevens in Cromwell, Connecticut, in 1843, was renowned for producing cast-iron hardware, toys, and some of the most iconic mechanical banks of the era. Their successful shift to toy manufacturing, including this racehorse bank, marked a pivotal chapter in American toy history. This intact relic is not only a collector's dream but also an intriguing piece of interactive art, ready to be displayed, enjoyed in its current state, or restored to its full operational glory. It’s a testament to the innovation and craftsmanship of 19th-century American toy makers, offering a tangible connection to the past and a unique opportunity for both collectors and enthusiasts. Overall Measurements: Standing 5-inches high x 6.75-inches wide x 4-inches base
