About the Item
Offered is an authentic 19th century hand painted original icon; hand painted on a wooden panel; in completely all original condition with no touch up paint or restoration of any kind (it has been examined under black light). The paint is strong with a green robe under a red shawl and a yellow top and crown; flesh tones to the face and a dark brown cross;. all on a beige over brown background with a hand painted gold border outlined in black around the perimeter and side panel; lots of detail with a vibrant irradescent halo around the face. There is pleasant age crazing to the paint, attesting to it's 19th century genesis and origin. The top front displays in hand painted red print "H ANA AIKATEPINH" which references "Saint Catherine", so we can presume that the iconic figure is that of Catherine of Alexandria; a 4th century Christian martyr, revered in the Orthodox Church. Tradition testifies that she was very intelligent and well educated and was martyred for he belief in Jesus Christ. Her remains were recovered by monks on Mount Sanai. She is a patron saint of the city of Katerinis in Greece.
The icon is a family piece (Greek Orhodox) and is personally memorialized and descended with an affixed hand written label to the rear (see image).
