About the Item

A fine 19th Century ceremonial toasting horn or rhyton. Comprised of large, curved horn set with silver plated mounts. Fitted with 2 silver-plated collars (each with jumps rings for a chain or cord), a cover, and a figural acorn shaped terminal. The collars engraved with oak leaves and acorns and the cover repousse decorated with the same. The cover finished with a satyr form finial. The body mounted with a silver plaque near the mouth that reads: "Gesang Verein Schillerbund (Schillerbund Singing Society) / New York / Jun 24th, Sun, 1867." The Schillerbund Singing Society is one of the oldest German singing societies in New York City, founded in 1850 and named after the poet Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller. The plaque is dedicated to a performance given by Gesang Verein Schillerbund on Sunday, June 24th, 1867 at 2PM in Hamilton Park at 69th St. and 3rd Ave. The program details are as follows: "Hosted by the Shiller-bund Gesangverein with the assistance of the Gesangvereins Schiller-bund, Melomanen, Arminia, Germania, Lorely. Männerchors Allemania, Mozart, Hudson, Kreutzer, Colonia. Drum and Music Choir of the 11th Regiment. Eintracht North Hoboken. Franz Abt Quartett Club, New Yorker Quartett Club. Includes Presentation of the flag by Fräulein Kalisch to President Karl Kalisch. Several events follow, involving the flag and illumination of the park, and finally, dance music." We presume this horn was commissioned to present at this event possibly given a gift to Karl Kalisch. Simply a wonderful piece of American (and NYC) musical history! Date: ca. 1867 Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: The lid is securely mounted and does not apparently come off. The silver acorn terminal at the horn's point has some wiggle to it. Otherwise, there is normal checking in the horn, some edge wear, some fine light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Measurements: Height: ca. 14 1/4 in. Length: ca. 20 7/8 in. Width: ca. 10 7/8 in. Items purchased from this dealer must delight you. Purchases may be returned for any reason for a period of 7 days.

A Very Fine and Historically Significant George III Silver Mounted Powder Horn
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This fine powder horn has silver mounts by the silversmiths Thomas Phipps and Edward Robinson, hallmarked for London, 1803. The charger on the horn has three adjustments and a side lever system and the wider end of the horn has a silver cap engraved with two crests, shields and family mottoes. The crests are for the Maitland and Dick families and represent the lineage of Rear-Admiral Sir Frederick Lewis Maitland. The Maitland line, represented by the lion crest and the motto Consilio et Animus represents the arms of the male line. Maitland’s father, also Frederick Lewis Maitland (1730-1786), had an interesting and successful naval career though was rather overshadowed by the later successes of his son. The martlet (small bird) crest and motto In Domino Confido is the female line, in this case Margaret Dick, daughter of Viscount Frendraught. The Dick family was important in the clan hierarchy in Scotland, being the head of Clan Crichton and heir to Clan Makgill at this time. Provenance Rear-Admiral Sir Frederick Lewis Maitland KCB (1777-1839) and thence by descent Rear-Admiral Sir Frederick Lewis Maitland KCB (1777-1839) Born in Fife, Maitland was the father of a distinguished naval officer as discussed above. Mailtand joined the navy straight from school and, whilst serving on the frigate HMS Southampton under captain Robert Forbes...
