About the Item
A rare and beautifully crafted example of early American Judaica, this hand-carved wood and silver seal is notable for its exceptional artistry and symbolic detail. The prominent handle is skillfully carved from wood, featuring dynamic floral and foliate motifs that seem to emerge organically from the form, as if growing upward from the base. The handle’s ergonomic shape suggests intentional design for ease of use, while its architectural structure—formed by four thick, branch-like pillars—evokes the appearance of natural columns, creating an openwork frame with a hollow center visible from all four sides.
Affixed to the base is an equally impressive silver seal, shaped like the foot of a classical column. The sides are richly chased with intricate floral and foliate designs, harmonizing beautifully with the carved handle above. At the bottom of the seal, engraved in Hebrew script, is the sacred opening of the Birkat Kohanim (Priestly Blessing):
"יברכך יהוה" (“May the Lord bless you”).
Beneath this blessing, the initials of the original owner are finely engraved in an elegant, brushstroke-style font, adding a personal and historical dimension to the piece. Likely commissioned for a respected communal figure or religious leader, this seal exemplifies the intersection of utility, devotion, and artistry in early American Jewish life.
Comes with the original felt-lined hard case.
